Compare international flight routes—not just the headline airfare
Searching flights to a country is only the first step. The arrival airport, number of stops, checked-bag rules, onward transportation and the way the tickets are issued can all change what you actually spend. VoyaFare's international planning resources explain how to compare those details before choosing an itinerary. Start with your preferred U.S. departure city—such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York or Chicago—and compare relevant arrival airports using the same dates and passenger details.
Our first focus is Asia, followed by Eastern Europe and Africa. Western Europe and other worldwide routes remain searchable. City and airport names below are planning starting points, not a claim of current nonstop service, ticket inventory or a special airfare.
Asia: Philippines, Thailand, China and beyond
Explore the new Asia flights destination catalog: browse 12 Asian cities, compare airport and transfer choices, and request a supplier-confirmed itinerary quote.
When visiting relatives or exploring multiple cities, an international airport that appears cheapest may not be the airport closest to your final stop. Compare the total journey into the area where you will actually stay. If you are planning several stops, a multi-city itinerary may reduce unnecessary return travel.
| Destination | Airports to research | Useful travel question |
|---|---|---|
| Philippines Manila, Cebu | Manila (MNL), Cebu (CEB) | Does arriving closer to your final island or city reduce the cost of an onward domestic ticket? |
| Thailand Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai | Bangkok (BKK/DMK), Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX) | Is arriving directly in your intended region more practical than transferring through Bangkok? The two Bangkok airports should not be treated as one terminal. |
| China Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou | Beijing (PEK/PKX), Shanghai (PVG/SHA), Guangzhou (CAN) | Do the displayed airports match the actual city and onward transportation you need? |
| Japan and South Korea | Tokyo (HND/NRT), Osaka (KIX), Seoul (ICN) | Could an airport change or extra ground transfer erase the benefit of a cheaper ticket? |
| Vietnam and Singapore | Hanoi (HAN), Ho Chi Minh City (SGN), Singapore (SIN) | Would a multi-city trip avoid backtracking between stops? |

New international travel guides: Thailand flights: Bangkok or Phuket? Manila: international to domestic connections Nigeria flights: Lagos or Abuja?
For the Philippines, we've published a detailed Manila-versus-Cebu flight guide, including a comparison of through-tickets and separate onward reservations. In Thailand and China, be especially careful to check the actual airport codes: several major cities have multiple airports, and an itinerary that arrives at one airport and departs from another can involve significant additional travel.
Travelers comparing Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and other U.S. origins should check the full elapsed journey time rather than assuming all one-stop itineraries are alike. Allow sufficient time for immigration, security, baggage and any required change of terminal or airport; current rules and routes depend on the provider and travel documents.
Africa: Lagos, Nairobi and key gateways
For travel to Africa, compare both your international arrival airport and the final city you intend to visit. A cheaper arrival in a different city can mean another flight, a long ground journey, extra baggage charges or additional accommodation costs.
| Destination | Airport | Useful travel question |
|---|---|---|
| Nigeria Lagos, Abuja | Lagos (LOS), Abuja (ABV) | Which city is your actual destination, and do your ticket and bags cover every connecting segment? |
| Kenya Nairobi | Nairobi (NBO) | Does your arrival time allow for your planned onward journey, especially if separately booked? |
| Ghana Accra | Accra (ACC) | Do the different fare options include the checked baggage you need? |
| South Africa Johannesburg, Cape Town | Johannesburg (JNB), Cape Town (CPT) | Will you reach the final city on one ticket or arrange onward travel independently? |
| North Africa Egypt and Morocco | Cairo (CAI), Casablanca (CMN) | Will you need a transit visa or another connection, and which city is your final stop? |
| East Africa Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda | Addis Ababa (ADD), Dar es Salaam (DAR), Entebbe (EBB) | Compare the full route, connection protection and travel time to your actual destination. |
| West Africa Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire | Dakar (DSS), Abidjan (ABJ) | What are the checked baggage and interline arrangements on each leg? |
| More African destinations Rwanda, Cameroon and other countries | Kigali (KGL), Douala (DLA) and other local airports | Check the exact arrival airport and all onward transport before comparing complete fares. |
For Lagos and Nairobi searches from the U.S., assess every stop and the rules attached to each flight. Check whether the seller is offering a single ticket or separate reservations, and review how missed connections would be handled. If you plan to visit multiple countries, confirm current entry and transit requirements directly with the relevant governments and airlines; those details depend on the traveler and route.
Eastern and Central Europe: city and regional alternatives
A flight itinerary to Eastern or Central Europe can be compared with travel into another nearby city, followed by a train or other ground transfer, when practical for your specific trip. That approach does not always save money; compare all costs and travel time first. National borders, entry rules and ground transportation schedules still matter.
| Country or region | Examples to compare | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Poland | Warsaw (WAW), Kraków (KRK) | Airport-to-final-city distance and ground transport. |
| Hungary, Romania and Slovakia | Budapest (BUD), Bucharest (OTP), Bratislava (BTS) | True final destination versus alternate-city arrival and possible border crossing. |
| Czechia, Serbia and Bulgaria | Prague (PRG), Belgrade (BEG), Sofia (SOF) | Connection quality, baggage and fare flexibility. |
| Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary | Bucharest (OTP), Sofia (SOF), Budapest (BUD) | Check whether your selected airport matches your destination and whether border crossings are practical. |
When comparing Warsaw and Kraków, for example, a low international fare into one city can be less attractive if your plans are centered in the other. Likewise, flying into Budapest instead of Bucharest is not automatically a substitute—they are in different countries. Start with your actual travel plan, then consider alternatives only if the full journey makes sense.
Western Europe: popular gateways and multiple airports
London, Paris, Rome, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Madrid attract many kinds of travelers, from short visits to multi-city trips. Here, the airport you choose can matter because a metro area may be served by more than one airport, and changing airports for a connection is not the same as transferring between terminals.
For a London itinerary, carefully verify the exact arrival code (such as LHR or LGW). For Paris, differentiate CDG and ORY. Rome's principal international airport is FCO; Amsterdam's main airport is AMS; Frankfurt's is FRA, and Madrid's main airport is MAD. These are location examples, not promises of a particular airline's current service. Compare local transportation and luggage handling against any apparent airfare savings.
For trips involving multiple European cities, investigate one-way versus multi-city or open-jaw itineraries. Returning to your first arrival city solely because a round-trip ticket looks cheaper can mean unnecessary train rides, hotel nights or domestic flights.
How hands-on airfare research can improve the decision
Automatic search tools are a useful beginning, but a fixed city and date search doesn't evaluate every sensible itinerary. A careful comparison considers alternate dates, actual airport codes, connection cities, ticketing arrangements and the total cost with baggage. For some eligible itineraries, an authorized consolidator or ticketing partner may be able to check a negotiated fare. Those options are not available for every airline or route, and an apparent lower fare must be verified before it can be sold.
Very important: Two separately purchased tickets can be cheaper on paper but may provide less protection when a connection is missed. Confirm luggage handling, terminals, check-in deadlines and ticket conditions. A calculated promotional inquiry amount on VoyaFare is not a held seat, verified discount or bookable offer.
Five questions to ask before committing
- Am I searching the airport nearest my actual destination?
- Do other nearby departure dates offer an itinerary that suits me better?
- Are connecting flights issued on one ticket or independently booked?
- What baggage, airport transfer and overnight costs apply?
- Who will issue the ticket, and when will the full fare and seat availability be confirmed?

Common questions about international flight searches
Which city usually has the lowest airfare?
There is no universally cheapest arrival city. Route, travel dates, available fare classes, ticket conditions and additional transportation make the answer different for each trip.
Should I search an alternate airport?
Yes, if it is practical for your final destination. Check exact airport codes and the entire cost of reaching your destination, not only the international ticket.
Can VoyaFare guarantee a better consolidator fare?
No. Any consolidator option depends on an authorized partner, eligibility, available inventory and ticketing terms. We do not guarantee discounts or airline contracts.
Can I book flights or pay for a ticket on this page?
No. This is a travel-planning resource. Use the flight search to compare available supplier-returned options, and contact the appropriate booking provider to verify pricing and complete permitted ticketing.
