Subscribe to our travel guides RSS feed →International airfare decisions are about more than the number next to a ticket. Consider the arrival airport's location, the cost of reaching your final destination, total journey time, overnight stopovers, baggage rules and whether connecting segments share the same ticket. An apparently lower fare can be more expensive when an independent onward reservation requires collecting bags, rechecking and traveling between terminals.
If your itinerary includes separate tickets, consider what happens when the first flight runs late. The connection may not be protected by the second carrier, and the traveler may have to buy a replacement fare. For multi-city trips, carefully compare an airline-issued multi-city ticket with separately purchased segments instead of assuming one is always cheaper.
