Start with the live airline offer, not an assumed child discount. Different airlines, operating carriers, countries and fare brands have different policies. The amounts shown by VoyaFare are informational until a supplier confirms the itinerary, taxes, rules and final price. Online ticketing and payments are not enabled.
Know who is actually traveling
When comparing an international flight, give the search the correct number of passengers in each age group. Age can determine the fare category and whether an airline requires a seat, special assistance or an accompanying adult. The categories below help you prepare your search; the operating airline's rules determine eligibility.
| Traveler | What VoyaFare asks | What to verify with the airline |
|---|---|---|
| Adult, 18 or older | One adult for each passenger 18+. | Adult ticket price, taxes, cabin, baggage and whether the person can accompany an infant. |
| Teenager, ages 12–17 | Count teenagers separately and enter each age. | Often an adult fare category, but the traveler is still a minor. Traveling alone may require a special program, routing restrictions or fees. |
| Child, ages 2–11 | Enter each child and age separately. | Seat requirement, eligible child fare if any, taxes, baggage and any restrictions on who may accompany the child. |
| Infant, under 2 | Enter each infant and age separately; the standard search is for an infant on an adult's lap. | Lap-infant ticket price and taxes, carrier age minimum, number of infants per adult, and whether a separate-seat ticket is needed. |
For example, one adult aged 35 + one teenager aged 16 + one child aged 8 + one infant aged 1 means four travelers, not three, even though the teenager might be priced in the same fare class as an adult. If a 16-year-old is traveling without an adult, the ticket cannot be treated as automatically acceptable just because a flight-search engine returned an airfare.
Do child tickets always cost less than adult tickets?
No. Some airlines offer an eligible child fare for ages 2–11, but a discount is not universal and may depend on the particular international fare. Turkish Airlines says child discounts apply only where the fare rules permit; Singapore Airlines describes special child fares on eligible bookings. Taxes and fees do not necessarily fall by the same proportion as a base fare.
That is why comparing two adults plus two children is not the same as asking for four adult tickets. The airline can return distinct traveler-type prices, or a single combined family total. VoyaFare should show the individual fare and tax figures only when its supplier actually provides them. If a supplier returns only the combined amount, dividing by four would invent a child price.
Is a lap infant free on an international flight?
Do not assume so. A lap infant may need a ticket and may incur an international fare, taxes or surcharges even without a separate seat. Delta, for example, distinguishes travel within the United States from travel outside the United States; Singapore Airlines also specifies infant-age, accompanying-adult and booking requirements. The actual fare must be checked for the airline and every flight in the journey.
If your infant needs an individual seat, contact the airline or fare desk before relying on an infant-in-lap search. A seat can require a different ticket category and an approved child restraint. A second infant with one adult can also require special arrangements. Do not assume that one adult can hold two infants on their lap.
How to read each person's fare, taxes and full trip total
For an accurate international quote, review both each passenger's components and the entire booking total. A supplier may expose these fields separately:
- Base fare: the fare for that specific adult, child or infant before taxes and ticketing charges.
- Airline-reported taxes: the taxes and mandatory charges attributable to that passenger as returned by the airline supplier. These may combine several airport or government items instead of listing each authority separately.
- Ticketing fee: a per-ticket charge only where shown by the supplier. Never count it twice.
- Shared charges: any disclosed platform or transaction fees that apply to the whole booking rather than each traveler.
- Complete itinerary total: every selected traveler's fare, tax and ticketing charge, plus shared charges, for the same dates and routing.
Always compare prices in the same currency, with the same passenger ages, departure and return dates, itinerary type, baggage conditions and booking channel. A lower base fare can become a higher overall cost after baggage, seat charges or a separate onward flight are added.
VoyaFare pricing transparency: where the live supplier gives separate adult, child and infant fare/tax amounts, the itinerary details can display each component and the booking total. Where only an all-passenger base fare and tax total is available, the site labels that group-level figure rather than inventing a per-child amount. The final airline/provider quote governs.
What if a child turns 2 or 12 during the trip?
That can change fare and seating eligibility, particularly on the return journey. A child who turns two before a later flight generally needs a seat for that segment, and the airline may require an adjusted ticket. Singapore Airlines specifically advises contacting it when an infant crosses their second birthday before a subsequent flight. Likewise, a child turning 12 around departure may no longer qualify for that airline's child fare.
Provide the birthday and travel dates to the ticketing provider if an age category may change. Do not assume every airline uses identical rules about the outward or return leg or that an existing round-trip search will automatically fix a birthday-boundary booking.
Can a 14- or 16-year-old fly without an adult?
Sometimes, with airline-specific restrictions. A teenager may qualify to travel alone on one airline or routing, while another requires a paid unaccompanied-minor program or prohibits certain connections. American Airlines, for example, requires the unaccompanied-minor service for 5–14-year-olds traveling alone and makes it optional for ages 15–17; its rules also restrict the kinds of connecting itineraries eligible for this service. Partner-operated flights may follow different policies.
A fare search alone cannot confirm whether a child or teenager may legally or operationally fly unaccompanied. Contact the operating airline about the exact ages, stops, travel documents, drop-off and pickup arrangements before booking.
Example: Los Angeles to Manila or Cebu as a family
Suppose your group is one adult, a teenager, a child and a lap infant traveling from LAX to the Philippines. Research Los Angeles–Manila flights and Los Angeles–Cebu flights using the same dates and four travelers. Check the layover airport, whether all legs are one protected ticket, the final arrival date, and whether your family can stay together across the entire itinerary.
A quote ending in Manila does not include a domestic flight to Cebu unless that onward flight is actually part of the itinerary. A seemingly cheaper fare via Manila may cost more after a separately booked domestic leg, bag collection and terminal transfer. Read our Manila versus Cebu arrival guide and separate-ticket risk guide before comparing headline prices.
A short checklist before asking for a family quote
- Specify the number of adults 18+, teenagers 12–17, children 2–11 and infants under 2, with each minor's age at travel.
- Provide the exact origin and destination airports, departure and return dates, and any dates when the youngest traveler changes age category.
- Tell the fare desk whether an infant will sit on an adult's lap or needs a separate seat.
- Ask for the operating airlines on every segment, not just the airline name at the top of the ticket.
- Request the base fare, airline taxes, ticketing fees, shared fees and total for all passengers in writing before payment.
- Compare baggage allowances, seat-selection cost, cancellation/rebooking terms and connection protection on the same basis.
- Do not send passport images, credit-card details or sensitive medical information through a preliminary quote form.
Start with the flight search, enter the real ages and counts, then open itinerary details. When live providers do not return age-by-age taxes, ask the fare desk to verify the breakdown. VoyaFare does not issue tickets or charge for flights through its website.
