How to compare airline tickets and flight schedules

A useful flight search looks beyond the lowest headline price. Compare routes, connections, total travel time, baggage and airline preferences before choosing who to call about a ticket.

Compare the whole itinerary

Start by choosing one-way, round-trip or multi-city travel, your exact airports, dates, passenger count and cabin. For example, Los Angeles (LAX) to Manila (MNL) can involve different connection airports and elapsed travel times. Evaluate total time and layover length, not just the first departure.

A cheaper ticket with a long overnight connection may be less convenient than one with a shorter transfer. Also check the operating airline: sometimes the airline selling a ticket differs from the carrier operating one or more flights.

Compare airlines that fit your preferences

Travelers often look for specific airline names, frequent-flyer programs or connecting hubs. Examples of commonly researched international airlines include Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, KLM, Qatar Airways and Emirates. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines may also be relevant to a journey. These are examples for comparison, not a claim of inventory, endorsement or affiliation. Which airlines appear for any search depends on actual supplier results.

What an experienced fare researcher checks beyond a search engine

Automated travel search is valuable, but a single set of dates and airports cannot show every practical alternative. Hands-on fare research compares different departure days, connection cities, airport choices, airline schedules, baggage rules and ticket conditions. On trips to Manila, Bangkok, Shanghai, Lagos or European gateways, changing the arrival airport or reducing an unnecessary domestic connection can matter as much as the long-haul fare itself.

Some authorized consolidators and ticketing partners may have negotiated or private fare options that differ from ordinary published results. Availability and ticketing rights are route- and supplier-dependent; VoyaFare cannot promise access to a particular contracted rate or any guaranteed saving. The value of human research is knowing which alternatives to investigate—and when an apparently cheap combination creates unnecessary risk.

Through-ticket versus separate-ticket combinations: A lower-cost combination of independently bought flights may not offer protected missed-connection assistance, baggage transfer or the same rebooking terms as a single issued itinerary. Never treat separate tickets as automatically equivalent to an airline-protected connection. Check actual ticketing arrangements and fare rules before deciding. Read more about VoyaFare's approach.

What should you look at besides ticket price?

How VoyaFare presents flights

VoyaFare's flight search displays supplier-returned itineraries and sorting controls for price, duration, stops and airline. Not every airline flies every route, and published offers can expire or change before ticketing. VoyaFare also displays calculated promotional inquiry targets; these are not held seats or bookable discounted prices. Please call our fare desk to check whether a specific fare and seat can actually be confirmed.

Check cancellation and change restrictions before choosing a promotional fare

A VoyaFare promotional amount is a request to check a discount, not proof that the airline will sell a ticket at that price. When an actual fare becomes available, review its full written terms: some low or promotional fares do not allow voluntary refunds or changes, while others require change fees and any fare difference. A 24-hour hold or cancellation option depends on the provider, booking channel and applicable law; do not assume a 48-hour grace period. Refund rights after a qualifying airline cancellation or significant schedule change may still apply. Read our promotional fare cancellation guide.

Family fares: adults, children, teenagers and infants

Family airfare is not simply the adult fare multiplied by the passenger count. Depending on the airline, a child aged 2–11 may have a different eligible base fare and tax amount; a lap infant under 2 may still require a paid international ticket. Teenagers aged 12–17 can have additional traveling-alone restrictions even when priced in an adult fare category. Use VoyaFare's international child and infant fare guide to compare the true passenger-by-passenger total and official airline policies before requesting a quote.

Smart searches to try

Search your exact departure and arrival airports rather than assuming a nearby airport is equivalent. When practical, compare nearby airports separately, plus travel dates a day earlier or later. Look at both the lowest fares and higher-priced alternatives for the airline, timing and baggage that suit you. A single search cannot guarantee every airline or every fare in the market.
