International car shipping: routes, containers and true costs

Shipping a car overseas involves more than an ocean-freight rate. The right quote depends on the pickup city, vehicle details, transport method, destination port, inland delivery and customs obligations.

How international vehicle shipping works

For an international shipment from Los Angeles to Manila or Cebu, you may need transportation to a U.S. export port, ocean carriage to a Philippine destination port, customs processing and onward inland delivery. The exact route and port depend on the carrier, vessel service and cargo rules. A port-to-port estimate does not include all the services in a door-to-door quote.

RoRo versus container shipping

Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipping is intended for accepted operable vehicles loaded onto a vessel, where the route and vehicle eligibility permit. Container shipping can be appropriate for some vehicles, household goods or equipment, but loading, lashing and terminal handling add requirements. Availability depends on vessel routes, cargo type and supplier acceptance. Electric or non-running vehicles can require special handling and advance disclosure.

Charges to compare on an international quote

Compare quotes with the same vehicle dimensions, route, transit scope, insurance level and list of excluded charges. A lower ocean-freight price may lead to a higher final cost if destination and inland costs are omitted.

Export and arrival planning

Before committing to overseas vehicle transport, check title ownership or lienholder permission, U.S. export documentation and the destination's current customs requirements. Review the transportation provider's insurance terms and photograph the vehicle at collection. If shipping a personal vehicle to Georgia, consult the Revenue Service of Georgia vehicle-clearance information and obtain confirmation from the shipping company about the exact arrival process.

Freight and other large shipments

International freight also includes full-container loads (FCL), less-than-container loads (LCL), heavy machinery, motorcycles and household moves. Weight, hazardous materials, packing requirements, dimensions and equipment access can affect both cost and acceptance. Freight rates must be compared by service scope instead of ranking an inland-only rate against a door-to-door international shipment.

Start with VoyaFare Shipping & Freight

The VoyaFare shipping planner supports vehicles, containers, heavy freight, household moves and parcels as separate planning categories. Partner quote APIs are not yet live, so a planned route does not create a shipment or guarantee a rate. Our aim is one clear branded place to compare authorized supplier quotes when integrations become available.
