Hotel booking: compare stays beyond the nightly price

Compare the total cost of the stay

Begin with a destination, check-in and check-out date, rooms, and the correct number of adults and children. A nightly rate is not the same as the total hotel stay price. Taxes, resort fees, parking, additional-person charges, cleaning charges and local city taxes can change the total substantially. Not every fee is prepaid.

Match room type and cancellation rules

Compare like with like: an entry-level nonrefundable room is not directly equivalent to a larger refundable suite. Check whether the hotel includes breakfast, Wi-Fi, parking or airport transport. Confirm the size and bedding for your entire party. A hotel in the center of a destination can reduce transfer time and additional transport costs even if its nightly price is slightly higher.

Choosing where to stay

Travelers planning stays in Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, Istanbul, Rome, Tbilisi or other destinations should consider transit access, walkability, local safety considerations, arrival time and how luggage will reach the property. Airport hotels can be convenient for short layovers; central hotels may be more useful for longer city stays.

• Does the displayed total cover every night and every guest?
• Are mandatory taxes or property fees payable on arrival?
• What is the cancellation deadline in the hotel's time zone?
• Is the booking prepaid or paid at the property, and what identification or deposit is required?
• Are breakfast, airport transfer, parking and additional beds included or extra?
